MyMaps by Google
Google just launched “MyMaps” addition to GoogleMap. Thanks to this, you can easily create your own custom maps. In term of user interface, you can feel the “google touch”: seems to be very basic, but in fact it’s one of the most complete custom map editor that I’ve seen: You can add custom points, with text (text can be rich text, there is a small embeeded HTML editor), empty of filled polygons, description can contains pictures, etc…
Nice features that are available:
- View the map from KML
- Share/send the map to other
and the latest one, which is in my view a killer feature, especially for many mashup:
- The map content will be added in the search box for place!
This mean that by creating public map, the content of these map will be added in local search. Smart and simple idea….
Congratulation to the GoogleMap team for this very smart creation. I hope that next step are probably here:
- integration with gelocalized picassa
- ability to automatically publish maps, instead of creating them manually

I didn’t see any way with My Maps to import KML files into a custom map. Have you found a way to do that?

If you enter the location of a KML file into the gMaps search box it will load it, but as ‘content created by others’.
